Value Stream Mapping arose out of the Toyota Production System, and is one of

the standard Lean tools. Although the relevance of VSM to software development

per se has sometimes been challenged, it is of tremendous value in visualizing the

whole enterprise and discovering waste. In every organization where I’ve used VSM,

everyone (from the CEO on down) has found the process enlightening – you can’t

optimize what you can’t visualize.

In this workshop, we’ll look at some samples, briefly review waste as defined by

Lean in a software development context, and then construct a Value Stream Map.

For best results, bring people from all over your company – sales, marketing,

fulfillment, support, finance, etc. – or come prepared to role-play.
